If the store is well staffed you can have a good experience, but you can tell when they're short-staffed and it makes for annoying wait times. Also, their automated payment system on the phone is utter garbage - it takes 5 minutes or longer just to make a simple payment, and that's if the system can understand you at all. Sometimes plain, spoken English is too much for it, and good luck getting ahold of an actual person.

I was looking for a particular color of product (stain etc) to repair warn places on six chairs (i had one of the chairs wirh me in the store to match colors). Carrie recommended a light oak polyshade that when I got home to appt it, it was a bad choice. Certainly there must have been other options. Wasted trip and purchase.

Everything was fine until I got to the checkout, they are check out person had to tell him 3 times if the item I bought was had a 10 percent off. Finally got across to him. That is 10 percent off. Almost had to yell at him. Lay behind a wide longer because we had to find out whether it was 10 percent off or not could not find very much help 5 minutes before quitting time, either.

My wife, daughter, and I came to the store to look for refrigerators on Sunday afternoon. We spent quite a bit of time in the isles looking at various models. There were five employees in the department and not one of them approached us to ask if we had questions or needed help. Finally I went up to the desk where three of them were looking at a computer and waited for one of them to look at me. Told him we had some questions so he asked one of the other employees that I could hear talking about football with another employee to help us. This guy followed me back to the fridge we were interested in and we asked if they had one in stock. He just pointed to the price sticker kind of like duh this is a special order. It would take 5 to 7 days to get one. No offer to show us other models or help us out. We just left the store. Customer service was not good in that dept. We can spend our money elswhere.

This used to be the best large hardware/lumber retailer in the area. Now service has declined considerably. I spent 45 minutes waiting for help to load three sheets of drywall. Initially they tried to help, but then claimed they couldn't because the flat carts were all being used and those are the ones they use for drywall. There were three of them sitting for the entire time loaded up with items, but no customers were anywhere near. I ended up having to complain to the manager, who was astonishingly useless. The highlight of the trip was the guy who helped me load everything. He was actually sincere.

Today my husband had to trek all over the store because most of the aisles were completely blocked. Menards is coming to Ames, and Home Depot is only twenty minutes away. Save yourself some time if you value it!
